Local Transport

Transport information provided by Outwood Parish Council – please note that while we endeavour to regularly update the above timetables, we cannot be held responsible for any unforeseen changes to these schedules.

The Horley Rotary Bus:

Every Tuesday afternoon we in Outwood have the use of the Horley Rotary bus. Starting at around 1.20pm it picks up passengers from outside their gates and takes them to Horley, arriving just before 2.00pm. The return journey starts outside the LIDL supermarket at 2.55pm, and then picks up more passengers outside Waitrose at 3.00pm. Passengers and their shopping are delivered back to their front gates by around 3.30pm or before. To use this service all that is requested is a contribution of £1 towards the bus running expenses.

Buses4U:

Buses4U is a 'demand responsive' bus service, available throughout the Tandridge District, that has no fixed route and no timetable, but travels to meet passengers who have booked a journey. The service is specifically aimed at those who cannot use existing public transport because of age, disability, or a lack of available services.

On average Buses4U has over 2,000 passengers a month, who use the service to go shopping; for hospital and doctor's appointments; to get to work, school or college; and for general leisure outings. The buses can take up to 16 passengers and are therefore suitable for both individual and group outings. This service is thus an ideal option for groups who would like to reduce their use of the car, but have no alternative public transport services available to them.

An early morning service is also available along three different routes into Gatwick Airport, starting at 4.30am seven days a week, for commuters and those taking early flights.

In addition, a 'Sunday Rambler' service ran throughout the Summer of 2005, meeting trains at Oxted and travelling to Squerryes Court, Quebec House, Chartwell and Hever Castle. This service will run again from April 2006.

The Buses4U service is available:

   ♦ Monday to Friday --- 9.00am to 3.30pm and 4.30pm to 11.00pm.

   ♦ Saturdays, Bank Holidays and school holidays --- 8.00am to 11.00pm.

   ♦ Sundays --- 8.00am to 4.00pm (and 'Sunday Rambler' during the Summer).

Free Bus Passes and Travel:

From 1st April 2006, senior citizens and disabled residents who live in Tandridge will be issued with a free pass by Tandridge District Council, which for the first time will give them free travel on buses.

Renewal forms have already been sent out, so existing holders can replace their passes. If you are applying for a pass for the first time, you will need to provide proof of residency, proof you are aged 60 or over, or if you are a disabled citizen, a letter from Social Services stating your eligibility. People with disabilities are eligible from five years of age.

Those who cannot travel on their own may also be able to get a bus pass which allows a carer to travel at half price.

The pass allows free travel on any bus service that begins or ends in Surrey. Those over 60 can use the pass Mondays to Fridays after 9.00am and at any time during weekends and public holidays. There are no time restrictions for those with disabilities.

A great deal of interest in the free pass is anticipated, so applicants are encouraged to apply early to help Tandridge District Council get the passes to those eligible by 1st April.

Taxi Voucher Scheme:

Outwood residents will be pleased to know that the taxi vouchers mentioned in previous reports are available from the Parish Clerk - please contact for further information, including instructions on use of the vouchers and a list of participating taxi operators.

East Surrey Wheels 2 Work Scheme:

The East Surrey Rural Transport Partnership has developed the ‘Wheels 2 Work’ scheme. Wheels 2 Work aims to offer a means of transport to work, training or learning where currently, no private or public transport options exist.

Residents (aged 16+) living within the area covered by Mole Valley District Council, Reigate & Banstead Borough Council or Tandridge District Council, can apply to the scheme to be loaned a 50cc ‘twist and go’ moped, for up to six months. While there is a weekly administration fee of £10.00, half of this will be refunded at the end of the scheme provided the moped is returned in good order and no insurance claims have been made throughout the term of the loan.

To be eligible for the scheme, an applicant must have a firm job or training offer (or a place at a school or college) which they are neither able to get to by using public transport, nor have a viable option using private transport. Each applicant must hold a full or provisional driving licence and have a bank account. The Wheels 2 Work scheme will pay for each successful person to complete a one-day course that leads to attainment of the Certificate of Basic Training (CBT) which is required by law for all motorcycle users. The scheme also provides a safety helmet, jacket, gloves and reflective vest to each successful candidate.
